Colonel Randolph 16 Year is a rare gem for bourbon enthusiasts. Produced only from 1990 to 1991 and exclusively exported to Japan, it had a limited run, making the remaining bottles a prized possession. Recent five-figure sales show how highly collectors value this rare find.

Old Commonwealth is thrilled to bring Colonel Randolph 16 Year back, in a unique way: this single barrel was personally selected by Gordon Hue, the same industry icon who revived the brand in 1990. At 106 proof, this 16-year Kentucky straight bourbon embodies the depth and flavor of vintage whiskey. In the late '80s, Hue, managing an Ohio spirits chain, partnered with Julian Van Winkle III to bottle barrels from a Pennsylvania distillery, most of which were released under the iconic A.H. Hirsch label.

Back then, bourbon wasn’t popular in the U.S., but Japan had a growing demand. The Japanese distributor Nishimoto Trading wanted a new bourbon label to complement A.H. Hirsch’s luxury positioning. After discovering Colonel Randolph, a Chicago label registered to the Leavitt family, Hue was able to secure the design and brand for Japan. The Colonel Randolph 16 Year was made using the same Pennsylvania whiskey as A.H. Hirsch, but at a higher proof of 116. Only 50 cases were shipped to Japan before the economy downturn in 1991 halted demand.

To revive the brand, Old Commonwealth sourced barrels of 16-year liquid made with the same mashbill. Hue, after sampling the barrels, chose the 106 proof for the 2025 release, citing its balance of sweetness, caramel, and a long finish.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Rich tannins, charred oak, cinnamon, honey, brown sugar, toffee, coffee cake, almond butter, and vanilla.
  • Palate: Baking chocolate, cherry syrup, candied peaches, and pecan pie. A soft, pleasing mouthfeel with good body.
  • Finish: Extensive dark chocolate note, fading to a light maraschino cherry sweetness. The finish is long and never cloying.
